November 26/09 The xx and Friendly Fires Review, by a non-music nerd

Last night i went to see The xx with the friendly fires, upon arrival i was greeted by a sea of plaid and way too many kids pretending they were too bored to even be there. Each person repeated one after the other how they were only there to see the xx, the ff's being way to mainstream now for their approval. I found the irony in hipsters thinking they go against the norm, but everyone there was a replica of one another spouting the same opinion, behavior and dress. I must say though, i concur, the xx were fantastic. Moody and emotionally gripping, their contrast between the reverberating spaces of their stripped-back sound and the almost insular intimacy of the soft, smoky duets made for a fantastic performance. Perhaps not the most entertaining on stage, but the xx were able to entrance the room putting out a gritty and steamy vibe.
